There are a mind boggling 26,000 health related websites in cyberspace. Institutional sponsored sites as well as government sites provide the medical consumer with a historically unprecedented level of access to current medical reasearch and knowledge. One study estimates 54% of "cyber-literate" persons use medical websites -- that is 41 million people which is expected to double by 2005 to 88 million people using medical sites on the web.
